Swimming is an enjoyable activity, no matter if you swim for sport, or simply for recreation, and relaxation. Not only is swimming fun, but also it is great exercise. Though swimming is enjoyable and easy, there are many people who don’t know how to swim for various reasons. Possibly they never had lessons to learn swimming, or maybe they are fearful of the water. Anyone can learn how to swim if they take it slow, and learn in steps.

[edit] How To Learn Swimming

Learn About Water Safety: There are several guides online that can teach you about water safety, which is necessary to know if you intend to learn swimming. The Red Cross offers a free water safety guide online.

Getting Accustomed To The Water: Before you can learn swimming, you must first get used to the water. This is especially true if you have a phobia of water. Sit on the edge of the pool and let your legs dangle in the water. Once you can do this, sit on the stairs leading into the water. The water depth should be at least waist deep. At this point you should walk into the pool until the water is to your stomach. Once you are able to make it to this point, you should spend as much time as you can, just splashing around in the water. You will find that you gradually lose your fear of the water.

Learn How to Float: This is probably the easiest part of learning how to swim. It only requires that you relax and breath normally while you float on your back. If you are not relaxed and breathing normally, you will likely slink, instead of float when you attempt this step; relaxation part is very important. If you don’t know how to swim yet, it is a good idea to have a friend present when you first try floating.

Take Swimming Lessons: The safest, and easiest way to learn swimming is to take swimming lessons. The Red Cross offers swimming lessons to help those who don’t yet know how to swim, or those people who have a fear of the water.

Have a Friend Teach You: Learning from a friend, or relative is the most common way in which people learn how to swim. This is much easier, because you will be learning from someone you know well, and you will likely be able to learn at your convenience.
